Co-founder Midhila Raavi shares the journey of AkiMi’s Gourmet, and the healthy desserts that are homemade

Are you someone who feels guilty for loving desserts? Do you feel bad after sugar binging on cakes, biscuits and chocolates, to satisfy your sweet tooth? Well, worry no more, with AkiMi’s Gourmet you can give in to all your sweet cravings – sans the guilt and calories with their healthy desserts range.

The idea

A gourmet venture in Madhapur, Hyderabad, AkiMi’s specialises in healthy desserts and snacks. It is run by two MBAs turned self-taught home bakers Midhila Raavi and Akila Vankalapati. Both friends since college and big-time dessert lovers would explore different places to try new varieties. However, they soon realised that there were very few healthy snack and dessert options in the market, for the health-conscious lot like themselves. So, they started replacing the unhealthy ingredients with healthier options and began experimenting. Once, their ways worked and were appreciated by people close to them, they decided it was time to introduce it to the world. And that’s how AkiMi’s Gourmet was born in April 2019.

Both the bakers have an entire room dedicated to their bakery and two helpers each. They manage to make time from their respective jobs and run the business successfully from their homes. Midhila, runs the venture in Hyderabad, while Akila takes care of the operations from Chennai where she resides.

Their offerings

Akimi’s offers consumers from both cities numerous gourmet options to choose from. Their healthy desserts menu includes teatime cakes, frosted cakes, brownies, blondies, cookies, energy bites, granolas and savoury items – such as post-partum ladoos. Talking about their best-sellers Midhila told Handi Talks, “Almond flour chocolate cake, Pecan pie bars and Carrot cakes are most loved by our customers and sell like hotcakes.” They only serve individual consumers at present. But they are in talks with businesses and look forward to future tie-ups.

Their menu is carefully curated by keeping up with the dietary trends followed around. From the vegan, keto and paleo lovers to those in search of gluten-free and sugar-free snacking options, AkiMi’s has something for everyone. They also specialise in making cakes for different festive occasions and make sure to include a new item every season. The ‘vegan mango cake’ for instance, is the new addition to their menu for mango lovers this summer.

Their Success Mantra

The duo recently celebrated their venture’s second anniversary. When asked what makes their healthy desserts brand stand out, Midhila said, “I believe it is the vision of our brand of making healthy gourmet and sticking to it from day one, is what is keeping us unique. We have been successfully delivering healthy cakes and snacks to our customers and will continue to do so.” Although a new kid on the block, AkiMi’s recorded a growth of 2X compared to the previous year’s performance by volume of products sold and projects a similar pace of growth in the future.

The gourmet brand offers home delivery and pick up options as well. Recalling how logistics was an initial challenge, Midhila said, “It was a big challenge when we first started out. Shifting from various delivery partners, I have now overcome the challenge by settling for one delivery agent. This way I can train him and make sure the items reach our customers in one piece.” They are also constantly making improvements on various other aspects. These include packaging, customer reach, photography skills, and of course their menu.

Offering customers yummy desserts and snacks, AkiMi’s Gourmet has healthy written all over it. And just like their tagline goes you now know whom to call next time you want to take a bite into the goodness of healthy desserts.
